While dental implants are an excellent solution for most patients missing one or more teeth, certain health factors can affect your eligibility.
Insufficient jawbone density is one of the most common concerns, though bone grafting can often address this. Uncontrolled diabetes, active and untreated periodontal disease, heavy tobacco use, and certain autoimmune conditions may increase the risk of implant failure and typically need to be managed before treatment can proceed.
Patients currently undergoing radiation therapy to the head or neck may also need to postpone implant placement. Some medications, particularly bisphosphonates used to treat osteoporosis, require careful evaluation due to their effects on bone healing.
The good news is that many of these factors are treatable or manageable, meaning implants may still be possible once the underlying condition is addressed.
